Copy CatsRus

I won't be in class tomorrow, but I found this video cartoon created and posted by YouTube about their copyright policies. I suppose they are trying to inform the younger audience about the rules. :)

This captures the main concern of YouTube, but doesn't address some of the current controversy about copyright laws. Infringement has become a fact of life for many of us and we justify violations of the letter of the law while still, I think, agreeing with the spirit. In this cartoon, for example, the character doing the "copying" may not get into trouble if the one being "copied" perceives it as a positive endorsement of the work rather than as an infringement of rights.

I think it is often the case that the letter of copyright law is ignored, but could arise unexpectedly to punish us. Something to think about as we enjoy the common spaces of our creativity.

  1. How we think about copyright has changed dramatically with all of the user generated content we enjoy. Nice clip Cindy.

  2. The ship has sailed regarding the copyright regime. While the books still say that the term is "Life+X" years, in reality the term is in months if not weeks, and as the current generational cohort manning the levers of power age themselves out of office (and power) more of we that know better how this really works will move in and finally put down the fix- which is to restore copyright back to 14 years, with one 14 year extension. (Seriously, folks; if you can't get the most out of 28 years, you're doing it wrong.)

As it is, we're already violating the letter to fulfill the need to mashup as most creativity relies on building from existing stuff in novel ways. The current regime, if fully enforced, would result in a stagnant culture- soon to suffocate itself to death. It cannot stand, and it won't for much longer.
